Emily Delster is an artist and psychotherapist based in Southern California. She creates a diverse range of pieces using acrylic on large scale canvas, watercolor and ceramics.
I have the privilege to listen to the pivotal parts of people’s stories— birth and death, weddings and divorce, resilience and the desire to die, victory and loss, God and the void, loneliness and connection. Every story is confidential, and when it’s a lot to hold alone, I pour the emotional load into the things I make.
Why “Flow Blue”?
Flow Blue pottery was originally a mistake. In the early 1800’s, intricate designs were transfer-printed onto ceramics using cobalt blue, but when they fired it in the kiln, the designs began to bleed due to the volatile behavior of cobalt oxide. But over time, artists began to appreciate the dreamy, watercolor-esque landscapes produced by the process. The style exploded in popularity and to this day, they are treasured pieces.
Without exception, every good thing I’ve experienced has been preceded by a mistake. Our imperfections are also our genius; they set us apart and define the edges of our unique stories, giving them arc and color and texture. They authenticate our humanity.
You’ll find imperfections, character and unmistakably human moments in every handcrafted piece. I hope you discover expressions of your own story embedded in these perfectly imperfect creations.
